Book: The Artist
Novelist: Deep Datewas | Publisher: Sahib Deep Prakashan, Bhikhi (Mansa)
This debut novel of novelist Deep Datewas is full of narrative charm. Written in the first-person narrative style, the main character of this novel, D Cyrus, lives in London, the capital of England. He is the son of Alena Cyrus, the famous and beautiful actress (artist) of England’s stage. His father is a depraved drunkard. Out of compulsion, his mother has to leave her husband and live in a small town near London, in order to raise her son well. For her son’s sake, she abandons her life at the peak of her acting career and lives in obscurity. She wants her son D Cyrus to also become a stage artist like her.
The language of the novel is Central Punjabi. The story of this original novel, written by the novelist, can also give the reader the impression of an English novel. This novel, which presents English culture, is in itself a unique experiment by the novelist — one that deserves notice from literary critics. The characters of the novel are vivid and heart-touching. They possess good human qualities despite enduring the sorrows and hardships of life. Especially D Cyrus’s mother Alena Cyrus, his beloved Jessica, and his friend Erin — despite their flaws — are embodiments of goodness. In conclusion, once a reader begins this novel, they don’t put it down until they have finished it. This is the greatest quality of this novel.
